SUSIMA MARTE DE LA CRUZ
Nanay Susing or Susima Marte dela Cruz, the
matriarch of the Dela Cruz House of Piña
in Aklan grew up helping her mother weave pure piña
cloth. Their efforts gave birth to the Dela
Cruz House of Piña, a homegrown business which has enabled her to send all
her children to the best schools in Manila.
Now, they are all
gainfully employed.
She was, likewise,
able to help in the livelihood of her neighbors in New Buswang, and other neighboring
barangays of Kalibo.
According to ‘Nay Susing, a simple square knot is all that is used by knotters. For
her, manual knotting could double or triple the output compared to the use of a
knotting machine.
She is a pioneer in adopting the traditional method of
piña weaving – the so-called “pili” or
“suksuk,” characterized by an inlaid design done during the weaving itself.
As a pioneer piña
weaver as well as producer and for inspiring and helping others in the piña
industry in Aklan, ‘Nay Susing was also awarded as one of Aklan’s Outstanding
Aklanons, a pillar looked up to in their community.
